Will my phones work with your PBX?

Almost certainly yes. Our phone system is Asterisk, which speaks ordinary SIP, so it does not care whose badge is on the handset. Below is the specific answer for the brands people actually own in Canada — including the handful that genuinely will not work, and why.

The short answer

If it speaks standard SIP, it works. Our PBX is Asterisk, not a vendor ecosystem, so Yealink, Grandstream, Poly, Snom, Fanvil, Cisco on MPP firmware and dozens of others all register the same way. Analogue phones and fax machines connect through an adapter. The only genuine exceptions are proprietary digital sets — Norstar, Avaya digital, Mitel Superset, Panasonic KX-T — which are not SIP devices and never will be.

This page exists because the question gets answered badly everywhere else. Vendors either say “we support over 500 devices” without naming one, or they quote you a full handset refresh because selling hardware is easier than checking. Neither tells you what you need to know before you spend money.

So: 341 model numbers are listed below, grouped by brand, each with a plain statement of how well we actually know it. We distinguish between hardware running on our systems right now, hardware that is ordinary SIP and will be fine, hardware that needs a condition met first, and hardware that will never work. That last category is on the page deliberately.

Standard SIP - supported

Ordinary SIP. We will provision it. We have not bench-tested this exact model, and we say so rather than pretending otherwise.

Conditional - ask first

Works only under a condition: particular firmware, an unlock from your current provider, or an adapter. Check with us before buying.

Not SIP

A proprietary digital set. No configuration will make it register to any SIP system.

What we actually run

Two entries on this page are marked as running in production, and it is worth being clear about why the list is that short. Those are the devices registered against our own Asterisk today, in businesses that depend on them: Yealink T5 series handsets and the Grandstream HT841 FXO gateway, currently handling calls for a pharmacy and a medical clinic.

Everything else on this page is marked as standard SIP, which is an honest statement rather than a hedge. Those devices implement the same protocol and we will provision them, but we have not personally had that exact model on a bench. We would rather write that down than imply a level of testing we have not done — particularly when someone is about to buy twenty of something on our word.

Why an open PBX changes the question

Most phone providers hand you their hardware because their platform is built around it. The handset is provisioned by them, locked to them, and frequently rented from them. When you leave, the phones stop working, which is not an accident.

We run Asterisk, which is a standards-based SIP platform. A phone registers to it by presenting a server address, a username and a password — the same three things it would present to anyone. That has a few practical consequences worth knowing before you sign anything with anyone:

  • You buy your own phones, from whoever sells them cheapest, and you own them.
  • You can mix brands freely. Yealink at the desks, a Grandstream adapter for the fax, a Fanvil unit on the back door, softphones on laptops — one dial plan.
  • Your existing phones usually come with you, which is normally the largest single saving in a migration.
  • We do not lock them. If you leave us, your handsets are yours and we release them. We would rather earn the renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Which SIP phones work with your hosted PBX?

Any standards-compliant SIP handset. Our platform is Asterisk, which is a standards-based SIP system rather than a vendor ecosystem, so it does not care whose name is on the phone. In practice that covers Yealink, Grandstream, Poly and Polycom, Cisco on multiplatform firmware, Snom, Fanvil, Htek, AudioCodes, Panasonic's SIP range, Gigaset, VTech, Sangoma and Spectralink, plus analogue adapters, DECT base stations, door intercoms, paging speakers and softphones.

Do I have to buy new phones to switch to you?

Usually not, and we would rather you did not. If your existing handsets are standard SIP and are not locked by your current provider, they move to us by changing three settings: SIP server address, extension and password. On a 25-extension office that is commonly the single biggest saving in the whole migration - a handset refresh at $90 to $300 per phone is $2,250 to $7,500 of hardware that was not broken.

Which phones will NOT work?

Proprietary digital sets, because they are not SIP devices at all. That means Nortel Norstar, Meridian and BCM digital sets, Avaya 1400 and 9500 series, Mitel Superset digital, Panasonic KX-T digital and NEC DTerm. No configuration makes these register to any SIP system. Also conditional: Cisco phones running Enterprise firmware rather than MPP, and any handset your current provider has locked to their own provisioning server.

How do I tell if my phone is locked to my current provider?

Open the handset's web interface from a browser on the same network - the phone will show you its IP address in its status or network menu. If you can see and edit the SIP server, username and password fields, the phone is standard and it will move. If those fields are hidden, greyed out, or the interface wants a provider password you do not have, it is locked. Releasing it is a request to your outgoing provider, not a technical fix.

Can I mix brands on the same system?

Yes, and most of our systems do. A pharmacy counter might run Yealink desk phones, a Grandstream adapter for the fax, a Fanvil intercom on the back door and a softphone on the pharmacist's laptop, all as extensions on the same dial plan. Nothing has to match.

What about my analogue phones, fax machine, or elevator phone?

Those keep working through an analogue telephone adapter, which converts them to SIP on their behalf. It is normal for fax lines, lobby and elevator phones, alarm diallers and paging equipment. Two honest caveats: fax over IP is less reliable than fax over copper, and elevator and emergency phones are life-safety equipment that we scope specifically rather than assume.

Do you support my phones if I bought them somewhere else?

Yes. We do not sell handsets as a condition of service and we do not lock them. Buy your phones from whoever you like, or keep the ones you have. We provision them either way, and if you leave us later we release them.
